Project description

Modernization of the structure of the front of the ED72 electric multiple units, taking into account static, fatigue, and crashworthiness requirements.

Solution

  • Design of a new structure for the front of the EMU and driver’s cab lining.
  • Static strength calculations, including vehicle compression/extension cases, vehicle critical mass loading, vehicle uplift, and test loads for equipment mountings.
  • Crashworthiness calculations covering three crash scenarios.
  • Fatigue strength calculations were carried out for the native material and welds of the ED72 multiple unit head structure.
  • SolidWorks software was used for the design work. The Altair HyperWorks and FATEVAS environments were used for the numerical calculations.

The result

The upgraded ED72 unit front structure met all the requirements in terms of functionality, static, impact, and fatigue strength.
